About this skill

Problem

In non-interactive Agent runs, simply asking for “print this to a printer” is not enough: the pipeline must identify the printer model, search or register a driver, convert the document, render it in the cloud, and send binary print data to port 9100. Sending raw PDF, DOCX, or image data over TCP can bypass driver rendering and produce unusable output. This skill compresses those parameters, API conventions, fallback paths, and diagnostics into an executable workflow.

How It Works

  • Non-interactive printing: centers on print_file_for_skill.py, suitable for --no-config-prompt --json, with CDF_PRINT_CONFIG_JSON used to set copies, color, side, and paperConfig.
  • Driver and printer discovery: uses search_driver.py to search for a model, optionally with --pick 1 --json to avoid input() EOF when stdin is unavailable, and discover.py to register an IP. If the model cannot be identified, it can probe via ipptool, HTTP, or SNMP, reading fields such as printer-make-and-model and marker-levels.
  • Cloud render pipeline: calls interfaces such as uploadFileMCP, convert_url_to_pdf, and print_for_skill, with headers Accept: application/json, tid: cdf_ai_terminal, and ttp: AI. _cvturl and _pfs must use JSON bodies; form-encoded requests may return 404. After _pfs succeeds, the client downloads the binary data from fileUrl and sends it to the printer on port 9100.
  • Fallback and diagnostics: _cvturl timeout can fall back to local LibreOffice PDF conversion and re-upload. If _pfs returns success but fileUrl downloads as 0 bytes, the rendered output is empty and the workflow must not bypass _pfs by sending the original file directly.

Boundaries

Requires Python 3.10+, LibreOffice, and optionally zeroconf for mDNS discovery; fits environments that can reach the cloud service and the target printer’s LAN. It is not a general-purpose document converter and does not replace driver installation, printer network debugging, or troubleshooting specific PDF compatibility failures.

Use Cases

  • In a CI run without stdin, print a PDF to a printer by IP and auto-pick a driver.
  • Apply black-and-white, duplex, A4, and 2 copies via JSON config before rendering.
  • When discovery misses an EPSON L6270, probe its model and toner levels with IPP.
  • Convert DOCX to PDF, download rendered data from _pfs, and send it to port 9100.

Best For

  • Backend engineers maintaining Agent automation who need print configs, headers, and fallbacks in scripts.
  • Office IT support staff troubleshooting printer discovery, driver search, and empty print payloads.
  • AI application engineers who need CI-safe DOCX-to-PDF conversion, cloud rendering, and port 9100 delivery.
  • Desktop automation developers handling non-interactive EOF, JSON bodies, and IPP model detection.
