About this skill

The Problem

When a folder mixes Office documents, scripts, archives, screenshots, videos, and shortcuts, finding a file usually depends on remembering its exact name. file-organizer addresses that specific case: a top-level directory is cluttered by file type, and the goal is to make the directory structure predictable by grouping files into type-based folders.

How It Works

  • Scan: Lists files in the target path, skipping existing subfolders, hidden files, .Temp directories, and system files such as desktop.ini and Thumbs.db.
  • Classify: Maps extensions to categories. For example, .docx, .pdf, and .txt go to documents; .py, .js, and .html go to code; .zip, .rar, and .7z go to archives; .png and .svg go to images; .mp4 and .mov go to video; .lnk goes to shortcuts.
  • Apply: Reuses an existing category folder in the target path when present; otherwise creates folders such as Documents/, Code/, Archives/, Images/, Video/, Shortcuts/, or Other/.
  • Report: After moving files, outputs a per-category list so you can verify where each file was placed.

Boundaries

This skill fits type-based cleanup, especially for downloads, temporary work folders, or attachment-heavy directories. It relies on file extensions rather than content, dates, or business meaning, so it is not enough when files must be organized by project, client, month, or naming convention. Because the workflow moves files, confirm the target path and keep a path record or backup before running it.

Use Cases

  • When downloads pile up web pages, screenshots, archives, and notes, group them by type.
  • When a project folder mixes PDFs, Excel files, scripts, and images, classify them quickly.
  • After receiving client files, archive Word, PPT, archives, and screenshots by type.
  • When cleaning a legacy desktop folder, move code, video, and shortcuts into fixed subfolders.

Best For

  • A test engineer cleaning downloads who needs to separate screenshots, archives, and scripts.
  • A presales consultant managing client deliverables who needs to archive documents, archives, and images.
  • An ops engineer maintaining a legacy desktop folder who needs fixed subfolders for code, video, and shortcuts.
  • A product manager organizing a personal folder who needs PDFs, Office files, and images separated by type.
