About this skill

Problem

Industrial drawing folders often mix PDFs, images, CAD files, and 3D models, with inconsistent file names and title-block fields. Manual listing can miss drawing numbers, part names, gear parameters, tolerances, and material data, while reorganizing archives is repetitive and error-prone.

How It Works

The skill processes a source directory through scanning, visual extraction, listing, and archiving:
- It runs scripts/scan_drawings.py with --input-dir to produce a JSON inventory of file paths, formats, and sizes.
- For PDFs and images, it extracts drawing number, product name, material, and specifications; CAD/3D files are recorded by metadata only and marked requires professional software.
- Specification extraction is constrained by part type, such as shaft φ50×200mm, gear m=3,z=32,b=25mm, and helical gear fields like mn, tooth count, and handedness.
- It generates a unified XLS list with scripts/generate_xls.py, then copies and renames files with scripts/archive_drawings.py using {drawing number}_{product name}, creating batch_01 or batch_02 when needed.

Boundaries and Notes

It is suited for existing drawing folders that need a standardized list and named file library; it does not replace CAD software for interpreting 3D structure. Blurred images, missing title blocks, or multilingual drawings may still require human review. For large batches, run 10-20 drawings per batch and ensure enough memory and processing time.

Use Cases

  • Take over an old drawing folder and extract drawing numbers, part names, and specs from PDF drawings into one XLS list.
  • Before building a drawing archive, copy and rename files by drawing number and product name while preserving the source folder.
  • When organizing gear shaft drawings, extract module, tooth count, handedness, and specs into the XLS specification column.
  • Process a mixed folder of DWG, STEP, and PDF files to generate a file list and mark CAD files as requiring professional software.

Best For

  • Mechanical records administrator: needs to turn scattered drawing folders into an ERP/PDM-ready list and consistently named file library.
  • Process engineer: needs to batch-check drawing numbers, part names, gear parameters, and specs from PDF drawings without manual transcription.
  • Production planner: needs to create a drawing archive list and organize files by drawing number and product name for later retrieval and release.
  • Technical assistant for export business: needs to handle bilingual title blocks, extract drawing numbers, names, and specs into one table.
