About this skill
Problem
When turning Markdown into a reviewable Word document, the issue is rarely whether conversion is possible at all. It is whether headings, lists, code blocks, and tables keep a usable structure, and whether the output can follow an enterprise template. pandoc-doc-convert targets this workflow: it treats markdown as the default input and docx as the default output, relying on Pandoc’s stable conversion path instead of hand-rolled parsers or fragile export scripts.
How It Works
The skill runs a clear pipeline: normalize parameters, check the environment, build the command, execute the conversion, and verify the result.
- Single file:
input.mdbecomesoutput.docx, usually with the same base name. - Template output: when a reference template is provided,
--reference-docis used so the document follows the expected corporate style. - Batch jobs: after confirming input and output directories, it processes each
.mdfile and summarizes success, failure, and error reasons. - Format routing: the same command skeleton can be extended to
pdforhtml; PDF output may require additional engine support. - Failure handling: missing inputs, missing templates, or unsupported targets are reported explicitly instead of silently producing incomplete files.
Boundaries
This is best for converting Markdown authoring into editable Word documents, especially when a stable template is required. It is not a typesetting tool for complex publishing layouts, and Pandoc output quality can still depend on syntax, extensions, and the local conversion environment.
