Problem
Desktop, download, and project root folders often become hard to navigate when files arrive from different sources. Manually creating folders, moving files, and clearing old items interrupts current work, especially when processing many documents, images, or installers at once.
How It Works
This skill handles a specific task: group files under a selected path into agreed subfolders by extension. The call shape is /file-organizer <path>, where the path can be the current directory, Desktop, or Downloads.
The workflow has a few key points:
- Confirm the target path
- Ask whether to preview or organize directly
- Preview mode runs python scripts/organize.py --dry-run and lists the moves without changing files
- Organize mode runs python scripts/organize.py and performs the actual sorting
Categories include documents, images, code, archives, videos, music, executable files, seed files, and fonts. For example, .pdf and .md map to documents, .jpg and .svg map to images, and .py, .go, and .sql map to code.
Boundaries
The rule is extension-based and does not inspect file contents, so it fits bulk sorting of flat directories. If a directory has complex nesting, symbolic links, name conflicts, or permission issues, review the dry-run summary first. If files must be archived by date, project, author, or business meaning, a fixed extension table may not be enough.
