About this skill

Problem

When screenshots, documents, media, and temporary files pile up in one folder, manually dragging them into categories is slow and error-prone. File Organizer Automation Assistant targets this low-value, high-frequency chore: it accepts a single folder path, sorts files by type, and returns a reviewable result.

How It Works

The skill runs around the local file-processing logic in file_organizer.py. Its core steps are:

  • Path validation: checks whether the directory exists before proceeding.
  • Extension-based classification: recognizes common suffixes such as .docx, .pdf, .png, .mp4, .mp3, .zip, .py, and .json, then groups them into documents, images, videos, music, archives, and code.
  • Automatic folder creation: creates the required category folders without manual setup.
  • Duplicate handling: renames colliding files, for example from photo.jpg to photo_1.jpg, reducing overwrite risk.
  • Report output: returns classification and movement results after sorting, making it easier to verify what was moved and what was unmatched.

Boundaries

This skill is best suited for bulk sorting within one directory. The current version mainly handles top-level files; recursive subfolder processing requires code changes. Unrecognized extensions are placed in “Other files” rather than deleted, and invalid paths produce a clear error. It is not intended for preserving original hierarchy, project-based naming, or cloud-sync workflows.

Use Cases

  • Before client delivery, sort PNG, JPG, PDF, and ZIP assets from Downloads into type folders to reduce version mix-ups.
  • At project closeout, organize mixed documents, code, audio, and screenshots in a fixed folder and collect the move report.
  • After vendor files arrive, separate duplicate image names so photo.jpg and photo_1.jpg are archived without overwriting.
  • Run a daily 08:00 WorkBuddy task on a fixed folder and push the completion report to the WeChat mini program.

Best For

  • Operations staff who sort mixed images, documents, and archives from Downloads into categories weekly.
  • Delivery leads who organize documents, code, and assets at project closeout and verify move results.
  • Administrative staff who handle duplicate vendor images, avoid overwrites, and generate sorting reports.
  • Automation users who want fixed folders sorted daily and completion reports pushed to their inbox.
