Problem It Solves

Document workflows often get stuck on format boundaries: Word, PPT, Excel, and PDF each preserve content in their own structural model, and plain copying can lose tables, heading levels, or page context. markitdown-wrap addresses this by providing a Python wrapper around MarkItDown, converting common office documents into Markdown for downstream text analysis, indexing, summarization, or automation.

How It Works

The skill does not reimplement document parsing from scratch; it wraps the MarkItDown conversion pipeline:
- Input: Word, PPT, Excel, and PDF document files.
- Processing: Python-based conversion logic extracts and organizes document content into Markdown structure.
- Output: readable .md text that can be inspected, edited, or passed into larger engineering workflows.
For engineers, the practical benefit is turning format conversion into a reusable call point instead of maintaining separate parsers for each file type.

Boundaries and Caveats

It is best suited for extracting and Markdown-ing structured office documents, not for restoring complex layouts, recognizing images, or performing interactive editing. If files rely on special controls, formulas, macros, or unusual layouts, output quality depends on the source document. Review the generated Markdown before relying on it in downstream pipelines.
