Problem

When an LLM needs to inspect PDFs, Office files, CSVs, images, or web pages, native formats are often hard to feed directly into a prompt. Manual conversion breaks the workflow and can introduce copy-paste errors. All to Markdown turns those inputs into Markdown so the model can analyze, summarize, extract, or generate from text.

How It Works

The skill wraps Microsoft MarkItDown and follows a simple path: the user provides a file path or URL, the skill runs markitdown, and the output is written to stdout for the AI to read. It covers:
- Documents: PDF, DOCX, PPTX, XLSX, XLS, EPUB, MSG
- Data: CSV, JSON, XML
- Media: JPG, PNG, WAV, MP3
- Web and archives: HTML, YouTube URLs, ZIP

In practice, three details matter: the result is emitted to standard output for immediate model consumption; file paths should use the actual path supplied by the user rather than guessed values; and large files may take longer, so users should be warned in advance. Optional plugins or OPENAI_API_KEY can enable OCR, image description, or audio transcription.

Boundaries

This skill is best used to convert existing files or URLs into model-readable text, not to infer business meaning. URL conversion accesses the corresponding network address, and OpenAI-enabled enhancements send image content to the OpenAI API. Quality for scanned PDFs, complex layouts, audio transcription, or YouTube subtitles depends on source quality and MarkItDown capabilities.
