About this skill

Problem

When someone has sudden cardiac arrest, the blocker is often not willingness to help but uncertainty about the first actions. Adults, children, and infants have different compression and breathing considerations; compression depth, recoil, rate, and pause time are easy to get wrong; and hesitation about using an AED can delay care. This skill turns those concerns into a practical teaching sequence that starts with scene safety and ends with a repeatable CPR rhythm.

How It Works and Limits

It first asks for the learning goal, patient group, and whether AED guidance is needed, then walks through the workflow: confirm the scene is safe, check responsiveness and breathing, call 120, request an AED, deliver compressions and rescue breathing, follow AED voice prompts, and continue the 30:2 cycle. It also flags common mistakes such as shallow compressions, incomplete chest recoil, excessive rescue breathing, and frequent pauses to check pulses, including Hands-Only CPR for learners who are not comfortable with rescue breathing.

Use it for education and first-aid learning, not as a substitute for hands-on training. It does not cover in-hospital ACLS, CPR instructor certification, academic research, or medical device development. Written guidance can build awareness, but skill requires periodic practice, and special cases such as pregnancy or obesity need tailored instruction.

Use Cases

  • A community first-aid volunteer teaches adult CPR and needs to sequence calls, compression depth, and AED use.
  • A parent learns child and infant CPR, comparing groups and practicing the 30:2 cycle with AED prompts.
  • A workplace safety trainer prepares materials on hands-only CPR, rescue breathing, and common mistake correction.
  • A new office employee reviews emergency procedure for calling 120, getting the AED, and continuing the cycle.

Best For

  • Community first-aid volunteers who need to explain adult CPR order, compression points, and AED use.
  • Parents or caregivers who want to distinguish child and infant CPR and learn 30:2 or hands-only choices.
  • Workplace safety trainers who need to package adult CPR, rescue breathing, and error correction into teachable notes.
  • New office employees who need to know how to call 120, get the AED, and continue rescue care.
