About this skill
Problem
Teachers, creators, and content teams often start a B2C course with a vague idea: unclear learner profile, weak goals such as “understand” or “master,” modules that read like chapters, and activities disconnected from assessment. edu-course-design turns course ideas into an actionable instructional design plan rather than just a generic outline.
How It Works
The skill first anchors the requirements and asks for or marks assumptions:
- Target learners: profile and pain points
- Prior knowledge: what learners already know
- Learning outcomes: what learners can do after finishing
- Delivery format and duration: recorded, live, cohort, or bootcamp
It then applies UbD backward design: define results, define evidence, and define experience. The output covers audience, selling points, goals, assessment, content modules, teaching methods, lightweight production, and launch iteration. Key constraints include:
- outcomes must be measurable
- each module needs matching assessment and pass criteria
- modules should stay under 7 and be named by capability
- after “how to teach,” each module is checked against Merrill’s five questions: real task, prior activation, demonstration, practice, transfer
Boundaries
Best for B2C knowledge products, recorded courses, live courses, bootcamps, and cohort training in early design. If inputs are missing, the skill asks follow-up questions or writes [assumption] and lists pending items up front. It covers core instructional design methods and templates; competitive analysis, pricing advice, operations SOP, and editable template libraries are extended capabilities.
Use Cases
- A lecturer turns a live-course idea into a launch plan with learner profile, measurable goals, and assessment criteria.
- A knowledge-product creator scopes a recorded bootcamp by confirming target learners, prerequisites, and outcomes before drafting modules.
- An instructional lead reviews a course plan to ensure each module has assessment, pass criteria, and a Merrill five-question check.
- A content team converts a course-selling brief into selling points, goals, assessment, and a lightweight production plan.
Best For
- Lecturers who need to turn course ideas into an assessable launch plan for knowledge products.
- Instructional leads who need to review course modules against UbD and assessment standards.
- Content creators who need to design selling points and goals for live or recorded courses.
- Course teams preparing a bootcamp who need to anchor requirements, modules, and production.
