About this skill
The problem
Recurring negative thoughts are often not a reasoning problem but a framing problem. A single setback can become a stable self-judgment: one poor exam result becomes “I’m bad at everything,” one challenge becomes “I’m not respected.” This kind of automatic thinking can amplify anxiety, self-criticism, and mental rigidity. This skill is meant for structured reflection, not for replacing professional therapy.
How it works
It turns CBT and REBT into a practical workflow. The core steps include:
- Situation capture: describe the specific trigger before evaluating the thought.
- ABC breakdown: separate A activation event, B belief, and C emotional or behavioral consequence.
- Distortion labeling: identify patterns such as overgeneralization, catastrophizing, black-and-white thinking, and should statements.
- Evidence testing: list evidence for and against the belief.
- Alternative generation: create a balanced thought that the user can plausibly accept, rather than forced positivity.
- Impact review: check whether the new thought reduces distress and rumination, and use daily records or behavior experiments to consolidate it.
Boundaries
This is useful for everyday stress, exam pressure, workplace setbacks, and interpersonal hypersensitivity. It is not appropriate for delusions, hallucinations, severe depression, trauma flashbacks, or self-harm risk. In those cases, clinical support should come first. The goal is not to deny real difficulties, but to widen a narrow negative view into a more complete one.
Use Cases
- After a poor exam, deconstruct the event, belief, and emotional consequence using the ABC model.
- When a single critique feels like a global failure, label overgeneralization and draft a balanced thought.
- After interpersonal conflict, test evidence for and against the self-critical belief.
- Record daily negative thoughts in a thought record and design a behavior experiment to test a new thought.
Best For
- Students learning basic CBT who want to apply the ABC model to emotional review
- Product managers who self-criticize under high-pressure projects and need structured emotional tools
- Psychology educators who want to teach cognitive distortion labeling and alternative thought generation
- Self-growth writers who want to turn thought-record templates into practice materials
