About this skill

Problem Addressed

Many study materials cannot be retained by a single pass: textbooks, papers, and professional books contain dense concepts and long logical chains, so straight-through reading often becomes visual scanning rather than comprehension. This skill reframes passive intake as an active reading workflow, targeting shallow understanding, poor retention, and losing focus mid-read.

How It Works

It progresses through Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review. It first builds a preview framework from chapter titles, a table of contents, or a topic; then generates concrete questions for subsections; during reading it asks the user to recite segment by segment and checks for gaps; finally it produces review questions and a knowledge framework. The model does not read for the user; it prompts the user to leave evidence at each step: describing the structure, answering preset questions, reciting key points, and connecting ideas.

Fit and Limits

It is best for textbooks, professional books, papers, and complex instructional material, not for novels, news, quick lookup, or summary-only browsing. It requires at least a chapter title, contents, or topic; long material should be processed in subsections. Skipping Question or Recite will noticeably weaken the outcome.

Use Cases

  • Before reading a database textbook chapter, build a preview framework from the contents and list questions for each section.
  • After reading an ML paper section, recite key points with the book closed and check coverage of preset questions.
  • For graduate exam prep, split a long chapter into subsections and run the five-step cycle on each one.
  • After reading a product compliance handbook, generate review questions and map relationships among clauses.

Best For

  • Undergraduate students who need to finish OS textbook chapters and retain core concepts.
  • Graduate students who must understand a paper's method section and prepare defense questions.
  • Compliance officers learning new regulatory policies and need to trace relationships among clauses.
  • Technical engineers self-studying professional books and using recitation to verify understanding.
