About this skill

The problem

When submitting to journals or conferences, papers often get stuck on format migration: Word drafts, plain text, and old LaTeX files all need the title page, author block, abstract, figure/table captions, references, supplements, and equation environments reorganized. Asking a model simply to convert the manuscript into LaTeX can lead to over-rewriting, invented journal rules, or false compile-ready claims when .cls, .bst, or figure assets are missing.

How it works

The skill separates clarification, mapping, and output. It first identifies whether the target is a journal class, conference template, publisher template, or generic submission structure. Then it identifies the source format: Word, plain text, existing LaTeX, or mixed material. After that, it maps manuscript components into a LaTeX structure and states the conversion scope.

Key capabilities include:

  • Preserve scientific content: formatting conversion is not the same as rewriting claims, methods, or conclusions.
  • Identify template boundaries: without target template files, guesses are not treated as formal requirements.
  • Check compile assets: separate available, obtainable, and missing items to avoid promising a compile-ready package.
  • Produce a structured plan: report input match, risks, recommended structure, source-to-LaTeX mapping, and missing inputs.

It is useful for pre-submission cleanup, conference template adaptation, legacy LaTeX cleanup, and reformatting during resubmission. It is not for fabricating missing figures, bibliographies, style files, or certifying full journal compliance without template evidence.

Use Cases

  • Map a Word manuscript draft into a journal template structure with title page, abstract, figures, and references.
  • Reorganize an old LaTeX draft for conference resubmission, including sections, captions, and equation environments.
  • List convertible items, missing .cls or bibliography assets, and required uploads before a submission-ready conversion.
  • Convert a plain-text manuscript into submission-oriented LaTeX while flagging uncertain template-specific requirements.

Best For

  • Biomedical researchers preparing journal submission who need a clean LaTeX manuscript structure.
  • Graduate students adapting old conference drafts to a target template and checking figure/table references.
  • Researchers managing multiple paper versions who need to separate convertible content from missing template assets.
  • Academic editors organizing title pages, references, and supplements according to journal requirements.
