About this skill

What problem it solves

In building automation, HVAC, and low-voltage design work, engineers often have to count AI, AO, DI, and DO control points from drawings, then assemble IO tables, device lists, and budget summaries. Manual counting is slow and easy to miss when point labels are scattered across text, blocks, and notes.

How it works

The skill reads DXF content, including TEXT, MTEXT, and block attributes INSERT+ATTRIB, then identifies point numbers and device numbers from readable labels. It classifies entries by type, signal category, and IO direction. In addition to analog and digital points, v1.1.0 also recognizes PI and CTRL entries, which helps mixed fire-protection and building-control drawings. It produces three outputs:
- Point table: point number, type, signal category, IO direction, quantity, description, related device, layer, and source space
- Device list: device number, device type, related point count, and related points
- Summary: total point count by point type

Boundaries and caveats

  • It does not read DWG directly; convert the drawing to DXF first, supporting R12 through R2018
  • Recognition depends on text or block attributes; purely graphical symbols without readable labels cannot be counted
  • Descriptions are taken from same-line or nearby text; increase the search radius if labels and notes are far apart
  • Custom signal codes or device prefixes can be added through TYPE_MAP and DEVICE_PREFIXES

Use Cases

  • During BA detailed design, extract AI/AO/DI/DO point tags from DXF and produce an IO table.
  • When preparing bid documents, tally control points and device lists for budgeting.
  • Before site handover, verify DDC/PLC point coverage and find missing labels.
  • When taking over legacy projects, audit AI, AO, DI, DO scale and related devices.

Best For

  • Building automation engineers: need to organize drawing points into IO tables during detailed design.
  • Low-voltage engineers: need to quickly count AI, AO, DI, and DO points for quantity checks.
  • Bidding engineers: need automatic point lists and device schedules for technical bid documents.
  • Integration engineers: need to audit drawing points and align DDC/PLC configurations before mobilization.
