About this skill

Problem It Solves

Word paper formatting often requires repeated manual fixes for inconsistent fonts, font sizes, line spacing, and first-line indentation. This skill applies a fixed academic format to .docx files: SimSun, 12pt font, 1.5 line spacing, and a two-character first-line indent. The original file is left unchanged, and the result is written to a new file, making it suitable for quickly normalizing body text, table text, and the Normal default style.

How It Works

The skill uses a built-in Python script with python-docx in an isolated environment. It accepts an absolute path to a .docx file and outputs a file such as original_filename_formatted.docx. The script handles:

  • Body paragraphs for font, size, and spacing
  • Text inside tables
  • The Normal default style

Headers, footers, and page numbering are preserved to avoid breaking existing layout. On success, it returns the output file path and makes the file available for download and review.

Boundaries

This skill supports only .docx files and not legacy .doc files. The formatting rules are fixed, so it is not a general-purpose style generator. If a document relies on complex styles, section breaks, custom headers, or special templates, the output should be reviewed carefully. First-line indentation uses Word’s native firstLineChars value, which should display as a two-character indent when opened in Word.

Use Cases

  • Before thesis submission, normalize a .docx draft to SimSun, 12pt, 1.5 line spacing, and a two-character first-line indent while keeping the original file unchanged.
  • After receiving a reviewer's .docx manuscript, create a new standard-formatted paper file without modifying the received original document and keep page headers and footers intact.
  • When compiling coursework, apply the same font, size, spacing, and indent to body paragraphs and nested table text in a .docx file.
  • Before finalizing a Word report, unify the .docx body and Normal style into the required academic formatting rules for consistent submission.

Best For

  • Students preparing a thesis who need to quickly normalize a .docx draft to SimSun, 12pt, and two-character indentation before submission.
  • Graduate students organizing course reports who want body and table text to share the same spacing and indent in one pass.
  • Researchers handling submissions or review materials who need a consistently formatted new .docx file without editing the original source document.
  • Office staff maintaining Word documents who need to keep headers and footers while unifying the Normal style for clean formatting.
