About this skill

What Problem It Solves

Desktop folders, Downloads directories, and project roots often become flat piles where PDFs, screenshots, scripts, and archives are mixed together. file-organizer addresses a narrow task: move files in a chosen folder into category subfolders based on their extensions, so the directory becomes easier to scan.

How It Works

The skill is invoked with /file-organizer, for example on the current directory, a desktop folder, or a Downloads folder. Its main logic is an extension mapping:

  • Documents: .pdf, .docx, .xlsx, .pptx, .txt, .md, .json
  • Images: .png, .jpg, .webp, .svg
  • Code: .py, .js, .ts, .java, .go, .sh
  • Archives, media, and other types: .zip, .mp4, .mp3, .exe, .ttf, .torrent

The workflow usually starts by confirming the target path, then choosing between dry-run preview and direct organization. Preview mode shows the intended moves without modifying the directory; after confirmation, the script runs and returns an organization summary.

Boundaries

It is useful for lightweight archival, not for classification by filename, creation time, project context, or file content. For example, .json files are grouped under documents, .sql files under code, and installers or torrent files are handled by extension. Prefer --dry-run before moving files to avoid reorganizing an active directory without review.

Use Cases

  • Clean up a Downloads folder by moving PDFs, images, archives, and installers into extension-based subfolders.
  • Preview a desktop workspace cleanup with dry-run before moving code, documents, and media files.
  • Archive a temporary project directory by grouping .py, .sql, .md, and .json files into code or document folders.
  • Prepare a media package by sorting .png, .webp, .mp3, and .mp4 files into image and audio folders.

Best For

  • Technical writers who maintain Downloads folders and need to separate PDFs, documents, and images.
  • Frontend engineers who tidy desktop workspaces and need scripts, styles, and assets grouped by type.
  • Data analysts who archive temporary project directories and need SQL, CSV, and documents separated.
  • Operations staff who prepare media packages and need images, audio, and video sorted into folders.
