About this skill

Problem

When a folder mixes documents, images, code, archives, and media files, manual sorting by extension is error-prone, and missing reports make the result hard to verify. file-organizer targets local directory cleanup where files should be grouped by extension rather than by content.

How It Works

Given a target folder path, the skill runs scripts/organize.py to perform the cleanup. The main steps are:
- Read files in the target folder and skip existing category subfolders
- Map extensions to Documents, Images, Code, Archives, Video, Audio, Spreadsheets, Presentations, or Other
- Create missing subfolders and move files into them
- Handle name conflicts, locked files, and path errors
- Generate 整理报告_日期时间.txt and print counts, total size, and elapsed time

It supports --dry-run mode, so you can preview the move plan before applying the final changes.

Boundaries

This skill fits ordinary office, project-asset, or download folders that can be organized by extension. It does not classify files by content meaning, manage cloud-drive permissions, or apply complex renaming rules. Back up the target folder or use preview mode before moving files.

Use Cases

  • Organize a mixed downloads folder containing documents, images, videos, and archives, then generate a report with counts and sizes.
  • Separate code, documents, images, and spreadsheets in a project assets folder, preview the plan with --dry-run, then move files.
  • Archive legacy deliverables such as .doc, .zip, and .xls files by extension and handle same-name conflicts.
  • Clean up a design asset folder by moving .png, .svg, and .jpg files into an image directory and reviewing the report.

Best For

  • Office staff organizing downloads: wants extension-based archiving and a local organization report.
  • Engineers maintaining project assets: wants code, documents, and media separated after a dry-run preview.
  • Project managers checking deliverables: wants archives, documents, and spreadsheets grouped with counts and sizes.
  • Assistants managing local libraries: wants bulk moves with automatic same-name conflict handling.
