About this skill

Problem to Solve

Many decisions stall not because data is missing, but because there is no stable evaluation frame: the analysis leans on one perspective, gets pulled by emotion and bias, or swings between risk and opportunity. Charlie Munger Cognition System turns the “avoid stupidity” principle from Munger’s public talks and writings into a practical checking process.

How the Skill Works

After activation, it responds in a Charlie Munger-style voice using minimal, negative-first, blunt phrasing. The workflow has three parts: classify the question by keywords, select the relevant models, and produce a consistent judgment. Core capabilities include the latticework of mental models, inversion, circle of competence, psychology of human misjudgment, Lollapalooza effects, margin of safety, and avoiding stupidity. Typical heuristics include listing “how to guarantee failure,” checking whether the decision is inside the circle of competence, using at least three cross-disciplinary models, detecting reward, liking, and aversion biases, and avoiding fatal “game over” risks. It is useful for pre-decision framing, business judgment, complex problem decomposition, risk assessment, and retrospection, not for issuing final conclusions.

Boundaries

The skill is distilled from public material and does not replace legal, medical, or financial advisors. It should not be used for specific stock picks, coding execution, highly personal emotional decisions, or urgent actions. For high-risk high-return goals, very limited resources, or fast-moving situations, the conservative bias and information limits must be made explicit.

Use Cases

  • Before an investment review, list how a deal could fail and filter out fatal risks.
  • When assessing a new product plan, check whether it is inside the team's circle of competence.
  • During a postmortem, identify reward, liking, or aversion biases that distorted the decision.
  • For a major career choice, build a decision memo using at least three cross-disciplinary models.

Best For

  • Investors who need a risk filter and decision framework before committing capital.
  • Founders evaluating new products, partnerships, or unfamiliar markets.
  • Managers reviewing project failures to identify cognitive and judgment biases.
  • Product people applying mental models to career choices and business tradeoffs.
