About this skill

What problem it solves

Choosing children's books often stalls between age fit and actual interest: parents know whether to look for picture books or chapter books, but lack authoritative sources, expert reviews, and award context. This skill organizes award data, influencer booklists, and a book database into a queryable knowledge base for evidence-based recommendations.

How it works

The skill supports four main capabilities:
- Smart recommendation: matches 0-3, 3-6, and other age bands with personality, reading style, English enrichment, or emotion-regulation needs, then returns 3-5 titles with reasons.
- Book analysis: retrieves author, target age, award history, reviewer comments, and the book's position among similar titles.
- Award lookup: covers Newbery, Caldecott, Bing Xin, and other awards, with filtering by year and age.
- Influencer browsing: reads structured lists from Curran, A Jia, Mei Zihan, Liao Caixing, and other recommenders.

The recommendation logic favors age-stage fit: early readers get picture books, touch-and-feel books, and parent-child interaction titles, while school-age readers get bridge books, chapter books, science, and history. Titles with multiple awards or multiple expert endorsements are treated as stronger candidates.

Boundaries

Age is a guide, not a reading ability score. Awards and expert endorsements do not replace interest. English enrichment lists and Chinese literary lists should be evaluated separately, so one narrow goal does not become the entire reading plan.

Use Cases

  • A parent selecting 3 adventure picture books for a lively 5-year-old who likes dinosaurs inputs age, personality, and interests to get expert-backed titles.
  • A book reviewer analyzing Charlotte's Web retrieves author, awards, multiple recommender comments, and its position among similar titles.
  • A reading-teaching assistant filters Bing Xin Award works for ages 9-12, then compiles a class reading list with year and age guidance.
  • An English enrichment advisor uses Liao Caixing's list to find a picture book for a 3-year-old girl, confirming age fit and reason before outputting a practice list.

Best For

  • Parents who need to filter age-appropriate, award-winning, expert-recommended children's books from a large catalog.
  • Picture-book or reading-class teachers who need to organize parent-child reading recommendations by age band.
  • Children's-book creators who need authoritative reviews, award context, and recommender sources for selection content.
  • English enrichment advisors who need vertical lists such as Liao Caixing's to plan a child's English reading path.
