Zk Zettelkasten CLI

The problem it addresses

When notes are scattered across Markdown files, chat logs, or ad-hoc documents, folders alone are not enough. You need tags, link relationships, and full-text search to organize ideas. zk targets this plain-text knowledge-management scenario: it maintains a local collection of Markdown notes as a Zettelkasten or personal wiki, rather than requiring a centralized database or cloud editor.

How it works

• Notes are Markdown files: create with zk new, edit with zk edit, and search with zk list, keeping content in files that are easy to diff and version.
• Relationships matter more than folders: supports [[Note Name]], #hashtag, :colon:tags:, and YAML frontmatter; use --link and --linked-by to inspect bidirectional references.
• Search and browse: combine --match, --tag, --sort, and interactive filtering to locate notes by keyword, tag, title, creation, or modification time.
• Local-first setup: it typically operates inside VAULT_PATH or the current directory, with configuration in .zk/config.toml, which fits Git-based or local sync workflows.

Boundaries

zk is most useful when you are comfortable managing knowledge through Markdown and link relationships. It is not a collaborative whiteboard, nor does it emphasize real-time multiplayer editing, permissions, or centralized sync. If your notes depend heavily on binary attachments, database-like fields, or team workflows, pair it with other tools. For lightweight text cards, backlinks, and full-text search, it offers a minimal command-line workflow.
