Problem

Macro-environment research often degrades into generic web discovery: collect news, summarize trends, and then fit the result into a PESTEL template. That approach is weak when the goal is a concrete business judgment, such as market entry, product launch, investment direction, policy risk, or competitive positioning. What matters is not just “industry context,” but an auditable chain of evidence that supports a specific decision.

This skill shifts the starting point from search to decision. It asks for fields such as industry, target_market, decision_to_support, time_horizon, and known_constraints, then decomposes the decision into missing-information questions across PESTEL dimensions: regulatory barriers, subsidy shifts, technology maturity, purchasing power, privacy compliance, supply-chain constraints, and similar items. The output is meant to be strategic intelligence, not a summary of retrieved articles.

How It Works

The core mechanism is capability-based source routing. The skill does not require a fixed tool name. It first identifies the required capability, then lets the runtime choose the best available implementation. Typical capabilities include:

• Private knowledge retrieval: search user-owned materials first, such as local notes, project reports, Zotero exports, internal databases, and uploaded documents.
• Authoritative feed monitoring: monitor configured RSS, regulator feeds, research feeds, standards feeds, and trusted media feeds.
• Official source lookup: verify laws, statistics, standards, government policy, procurement rules, and regulator positions.
• Industry report discovery: find consulting reports, market research, company filings, and association publications.
• Academic and patent discovery: assess technical maturity, research direction, patent activity, and standards work.
• General web discovery: use only as a fallback when higher-priority sources are insufficient, and cross-check important claims.

After retrieval, the skill performs evidence scoring. Each item is scored on source authority, recency, decision relevance, cross-source confirmation, and data specificity. Results are tagged as Strong Evidence, Medium Evidence, Weak Signal, or Insufficient. High-impact recommendations require at least one strong evidence item or two independent medium evidence items. Legal and policy claims should be verified with official or regulatory sources whenever possible.

Boundaries and Caveats

This skill is useful for decision-driven macro research, not for generic industry overviews or broad trend scanning. Its value depends on available retrieval sources: private knowledge bases, RSS or regulator feeds, official websites, industry reports, academic papers, and patents. If no retrieval capability is available, the result should be marked framework-only rather than evidence-based.

Three guardrails matter in practice: do not make strategic conclusions from a single weak source; do not treat unverified news signals as facts; and do not use LLM memory as factual evidence. The skill requires explicit assumptions, limitations, confidence levels, and remaining unknowns, making it better suited for engineering, strategy, product, investment, and compliance research workflows.
