About this skill
Problem Solved
Reference errors in research writing are rarely missing papers; they are broken DOIs, wrong author names, missing pages, duplicate entries, and inconsistent BibTeX citation keys. Copying metadata from web pages or entering citations manually can silently propagate unreliable records into a manuscript.
How It Works
citation-management structures citation work into search, extraction, formatting, and validation:
- Search: query Google Scholar and PubMed using operators such as intitle:, author:, MeSH terms, and boolean logic to locate relevant papers.
- Extract: resolve DOI, PMID, arXiv ID, or URL through sources such as CrossRef, PubMed E-utilities, and arXiv API, then fill author, title, journal, year, and other fields.
- Format: clean BibTeX entries, normalize citation keys, field order, title-case protection, and page ranges such as --.
- Validate: check DOI resolution, required fields, data consistency, duplicate citations, and LaTeX compatibility issues.
Boundaries and Caveats
This skill fits reference engineering for papers, reports, and LaTeX manuscripts, but it does not replace the analytical judgment required for a literature review. If a preprint has a published version, prefer the published record; and if the workflow only searches for papers without metadata verification, unreliable citations can still slip through.
Use Cases
- Verify whether DOIs resolve correctly while cleaning duplicate BibTeX entries for a LaTeX paper.
- Convert DOIs, PMIDs, and arXiv IDs into complete BibTeX metadata during a literature review.
- Check required fields, pages, volumes, and citation keys before journal submission.
- Find biomedical papers in PubMed using MeSH terms and field tags, then export structured results.
Best For
- Researchers preparing journal submissions who need complete reference fields and compilable BibTeX syntax.
- Graduate students writing LaTeX papers who need to consolidate scattered DOIs and web citations into one file.
- Medical researchers running systematic reviews who need to extract MeSH terms, authors, years, and PMIDs from PubMed.
- Engineering teams maintaining paper libraries who need to detect duplicate citations, broken DOIs, and inconsistent entries.
