About this skill

Problem to Solve

Many stocks appear to grow quickly, but the purchase price may already embed years of optimistic expectations; high growth does not automatically produce high returns. This skill turns Siegel's long-term investing principles into executable checks: identifying the growth-rate trap, testing D-I-V fitness, and defining decision boundaries from stock screening to portfolio construction.

How the Skill Works

The core is three indicators:
- D / Dividend: check yield, payout ratio, and consecutive payment history, with emphasis on dividend reinvestment.
- I / International: check overseas revenue share and cross-market diversification to reduce single-market risk.
- V / Valuation: compare current P/E with historical averages, sector medians, and implied growth.

The screening uses a six-step weighted workflow: valuation, dividend quality, earnings quality, financial strength, growth expectation gap, and industry moat. Each dimension is scored +1, 0, or -1. The rules are explicit: at least three +1 scores and no -1 enter the candidate pool; one -1 goes to watch; two or more -1 means abandon or wait for a valuation reset. Portfolio guidance favors a core-satellite structure: 60-70% broad index exposure, 30-40% D-I-V selected stocks or ETFs, no single sector above 25%, plus global diversification and periodic rebalancing.

Boundaries

The skill is oriented toward long-term value and fundamentals review, not short-term trading, event-driven strategies, or leverage. Historical thresholds such as dividend yield, P/E percentile, and ROE should be adjusted for business models; long-term holding still requires stopping when fundamentals deteriorate.

Use Cases

  • Use D-I-V and six-step scores to screen a candidate stock.
  • Build core-satellite mix with broad indices and selected ETFs.
  • Check holdings for P/E, yield, and growth-trap signals.
  • Rebalance sector, overseas, and target weights semiannually.

Best For

  • Individual investors reviewing equity fundamentals and needing a scoring checklist for valuation, dividend, and moat
  • Long-term portfolio builders needing sector concentration limits and rebalancing rules
  • Analysts checking whether sector hype, P/E percentile, and earnings expectations signal a growth trap
  • Personal portfolio managers reviewing broad index plus satellite holdings and overseas allocation ratios
