About this skill

What Problem It Solves

For 2D game character animation, the hard part is usually not generating a single frame, but keeping multiple frames consistent. A character must preserve the same art style, palette, proportions, outfit, and details across four directions and multiple action sets. Manual workflows often require repeated redrawing, white-background cleanup, and frame-count checks, and the final sprite sheet can still have missing cells, wrong dimensions, or style drift.

How It Works

The workflow uses a reference image as the visual anchor. It first establishes the four directional standing frames, then generates animation frames in the order Left → Front → Right → Back. Each row contains 10 frames: stand, three walk frames, three run frames, and three death frames, producing a 4×10 transparent-background PNG. Animation prompts are required to reference the corresponding standing frame and preserve style, outfit, proportions, and palette details extracted from the reference. After merging, the process validates the grid dimensions and confirms that all 40 cells are filled. Style validation compares each row's action frames against its standing frame; inconsistent frames are regenerated after re-reading the standing frame and strengthening the prompt, with up to three retries per failed frame.

Boundaries and Notes

This is useful for producing engine-ready base sprite sheets, but output quality still depends on the reference image, the underlying image model, and character complexity. Strict pixel alignment, complex attack animations, or heavily custom effects may still need manual cleanup. The default frame size is 200×200 and can be overridden; white backgrounds are converted to transparency during merging.

Use Cases

  • Prepare four-directional walk, run, and death animation for a web mini-game and export a transparent sprite sheet ready for frame slicing.
  • Turn one character standing illustration into left/front/right/back standing frames and batch-produce consistently styled 3-frame walk cycles.
  • Organize 40 character action frames into a 4×10 grid, then check missing frames, dimensions, and palette drift before engine handoff.
  • Convert white-background character frames into transparent animation sequences for Unity or Cocos 2D character assets.

Best For

  • Indie game developers who need quick four-directional action frames and a usable sprite sheet for a 2D character.
  • Game art interns who need to expand one standing illustration into consistently styled multi-frame animation with less manual redraw.
  • Web mini-game leads who need transparent character sprites in a fixed 4×10 layout for engine frame slicing.
  • Creative tool developers who need base character animation assets from a reference image before interaction development.
