About this skill

Problem

Exit interviews often fail when departing employees give polished answers such as “personal reasons” or “family needs.” HR and managers may not be able to separate real drivers from socially acceptable explanations, and the session can become a formality.

How it works

The skill breaks exit interviewing into a repeatable workflow:
- Preparation: review role, tenure, performance, and team context, then choose a suitable interviewer;
- Guide design: build a path from warm-up → core → deep → closing questions;
- Signal detection: identify common pre-resignation behavior changes;
- Analysis: classify causes into compensation, growth, management, culture, and personal factors.

It treats the interview as a source of organizational learning rather than a last-minute retention tactic. The output favors structured guides, questioning strategies, and follow-up actions instead of generic talking points.

Boundaries

It is not intended for termination conversations, labor disputes, counseling, or retention negotiations. Employees may withhold candid feedback, and a single interview has limited information value. It works best when combined with anonymous surveys, peer input, and longitudinal turnover data.

Use Cases

  • After a resignation is submitted, an HRBP needs a structured exit-interview guide moving from warm-up to root causes.
  • A manager reviewing quarterly attrition needs to code multiple departure interviews into management, growth, and compensation themes.
  • Before a cross-level interview, HR needs questions that avoid blunt cause questions and invite discussion of unmet expectations.
  • A team lead needs to spot repeated pre-resignation warning signals and turn them into management improvement actions.

Best For

  • HRBPs handling resignations who need interview guides and analyzable cause categories.
  • Managers of high-turnover teams who need early-warning signals and management improvement cues.
  • HR data analysts who need to turn multiple interview records into quarterly trend-report material.
  • OD consultants who need interview frameworks without touching labor disputes or retention negotiations.
