About this skill
Problem to Solve
Student goals often remain vague, such as I want to help others or I want to do meaningful work, or are driven by external expectations from parents, teachers, and job prospects. Educators relying only on informal conversation may struggle to distinguish real interests from borrowed goals, clarify vague wishes into actionable dreams, and design a path that is neither too broad nor too rigid.
How It Works
The skill turns dream inspiration into a repeatable coaching and planning workflow:
- Signal detection: Uses behavioral, expressive, and creative cues such as
intense focus,if I could...statements, and repeated project themes to locate latent interests. - Clarification prompts: Applies questions like “why,” “what if you never did this,” and “what are you willing to give up” to separate external expectations from internal motivation and connect goals to values.
- Path design: Structures exploration, deepening, and breakthrough stages, then uses backward planning, exploratory planning, or capability planning to create milestones and SMART action items.
- Iteration loop: Uses weekly reviews, monthly retrospectives,
PDCA, andOODAto decide when to fine-tune actions, adjust stage goals, or rethink the overall direction.
Scope and Limits
It is useful for classroom mentors, parents, and study-planning assistants who guide interest discovery and goal breakdown. It should not replace psychological counseling, crisis intervention, or personalized medical advice. Outcomes depend on multiple conversations, real-world experiences, and external feedback; it is not a one-session solution.
Use Cases
- A class teacher conducts pre-college interest interviews, clarifying vague game interests into executable directions.
- A family educator helps a child weigh school options, separating parental expectations from internal motivation.
- A study planner builds an 18-month interest-development plan for a high school student, breaking it into milestones and weekly actions.
- A mentor reviews a student's project interests, using value questions to prioritize physics, coding, or music.
Best For
- Class teachers handling college guidance, needing to turn vague interests into discussable directions.
- Parents supporting career planning, wanting to separate genuine wishes from external pressure.
- Middle-school psychology or development teachers, needing multi-round interest clarification conversations.
- Youth mentors, needing to convert short-term student experiences into staged action lists.
