About this skill

The Problem

Inventors are often deeply technical but lack the legal phrasing and structural awareness required for patent drafting. Handing raw technical docs to an attorney often leads to vague "distinguishing technical features," missing causal links in beneficial effects, or subject matter eligibility risks in software/AI domains. This skill uses conversational guidance to transform an inventor's brain-dump into a structured disclosure, filling in the logical loops that attorneys value most.

Core Capabilities & Key Steps

  • Source Material Ingestion: Prioritizes PPTs, design docs, or papers. Uses markitdown-skill or OCR tools to extract text and pre-fill the official template. It only asks questions about the gaps, avoiding zero-to-one dictation.
  • Phased Deep-Dive Dialogue: Strictly follows interview_playbook.md, moving from ice-breaking to pain points and technical solutions. For software/AI, it enforces a "subject matter/technicality self-check" to anchor "technical problem—technical means—technical effect."
  • Distinguishing Features & Causal Links: Actively probes for differences over the prior art and requires beneficial effects to map to specific changes, refusing to just describe a "good product."
  • Text-Image Integration & Fallback Generation: Actively collects diagrams and maps them to chapters; if the inventor lacks diagrams, it calls gen_diagram.py to generate architecture or flowchart drafts, marking them as "Schematic for review."
  • Word Delivery: Uses build_docx.py to strictly rebuild the document according to the official template, automatically handling typography, figure numbering, and the footer feedback block.

Boundaries & Cautions

  • Not Legal Advice: The output is a technical disclosure, not a substitute for formal drafting and legal risk assessment by a practicing patent attorney.
  • Fidelity Principle: No hallucination of technical details missing from the source material; inferred content must be marked as "Understood from source, needs confirmation."
  • Novelty Warning: If input materials are published papers or live products, it warns of novelty risks, but the inventor must still confirm the exact disclosure date.

Use Cases

  • Inventor provides solution PPT and design docs, then completes official disclosure sections and marks distinguishing technical features.
  • Software engineer drafts a patent disclosure and performs the technical problem, technical means, and technical effect self-check.
  • Hardware team documents circuit connections as background, technical solution, embodiments, and causal chain of beneficial effects.
  • Patent agent turns scattered oral notes into an official-template Word disclosure and lists missing items for review.

Best For

  • R&D inventors unfamiliar with patent drafting who need a complete technical disclosure.
  • Software or algorithm engineers who need technical problem, means, and effect wording.
  • Hardware or circuit engineers who need background, embodiment parameters, and effect causal chains.
  • Patent or legal staff who need scattered materials structured into attorney-reviewable Word disclosures.
