About this skill
Problem
When local files accumulate on the desktop or in the Downloads folder, manually determining file types, creating directories, and moving files is easy to do incompletely. Further sorting by month or project keywords quickly becomes repetitive. The file auto-archiver skill turns “type detection, directory creation, and file moving” into a rule-based workflow and produces a reviewable report.
How It Works
After the user provides a file path and an archiving rule, the skill operates through the following steps:
- File type detection: distinguishes common formats such as images, documents, videos, code, and archives.
- Directory creation: creates category folders like
images/documents/videos/codebased on detected types. - Move and organize files: places files into the matching category, with optional secondary sorting by date or keyword.
- Archive report: outputs an operation log, category statistics, and before/after comparison to help review misplaced files.
Boundaries
- Explicit instruction only: the user must provide a concrete path or archiving instruction; the skill should not move files during vague requests.
- Confirmation before action: the skill confirms the archiving rule first to reduce the risk of accidental moves or deletions.
- Avoids system-critical files: it operates only on ordinary user-specified files and does not touch system-level content.
Use Cases
- Sort mixed screenshots, PDFs, and scripts on the desktop into type-specific folders and verify the move report.
- Move last month's downloaded images into a dated folder such as 2026-04, then review the before/after comparison.
- Separate project documents and code files by keyword, with an operation log and category statistics for checking.
- Move PDFs from Downloads into a study material folder on D drive and confirm the archiving report.
Best For
- Content editor maintaining local asset folders: needs to archive downloaded images and documents quickly with a review trail.
- Project assistant managing delivery files: needs to sort documents and code by type and keyword into separate directories.
- Marketing operations staff organizing client assets: needs to move PDFs and screenshots into a specified study folder with a report.
- Office administrator handling archiving: needs to tidy ordinary desktop or download files by type and verify the moves.
