Preface

When running long tasks with DeepSeek Harness’s dsh web, it is common for the window to be in the background while you are looking at other applications, or for the AI to be waiting for sandbox authorization, ask_user_question, or plan approval—with no obvious movement on the page, it is easy to miss. Simply glancing at the interface makes it hard to distinguish between “still running” and “stopped waiting for you.” dsh-notify-tone is a client plugin maintained by Talone22. It hooks into the DSH Web GUI to provide triple reminders via sound, screen lighting effects, and system notifications at two key nodes: “User action required” and “End of each response round.” It does not modify any original DSH components.

What is this

dsh-notify-tone is for the dsh web version: it monitors session states, plays sounds, displays visual overlays, and sends OS-level notifications at appropriate times, while providing a draggable 🔔 floating button and settings menu in the bottom right corner. The project is hosted on GitHub at Talone22/dsh-notify-tone, and the community directory entry can be found at the SkillHub Plugin Page. It is categorized as a client-side plugin. The README notes that this project was designed, developed, and tested with the assistance of DeepSeek. The license is MIT.

Core Features

Two Trigger Timings

  • Action Required Alert: When a task execution encounters a need for user authorization or selection (e.g., sandbox permission popups, ask_user_question, plan approvals, etc.), it triggers a prompt sound, visual lighting effect, and system notification simultaneously.
  • Response Completion Alert: When the AI finishes a round of response, it triggers the same triple reminders.

Sound

Uses Web Audio synthesis (fundamental frequency + overtones, no dependency on audio files). It includes 5 built-in timbres: Classic Two-tone, Crisp Bell, Bright Triple, Soft Light, and Sharp Warning (high-frequency square wave). You can click to preview and select them in the menu.

Visuals

Large glowing arcs around the screen edges, combined with a pulsing animation that squeezes inward; it does not obstruct content or intercept mouse clicks. “Action Required” and “Response Completion” can be colored separately: 8 presets or custom hues, with instant preview upon selection.

System Notifications

Triggers OS-level desktop notifications (including system sounds). These are visible even when outside the browser, in other windows, or when the browser is minimized; clicking the notification returns you to the dsh window. First-time use requires authorization in the browser (requested when you turn on the toggle).

Toggles and Persistence

Four independent toggles: Master Switch, Sound, Visuals, and System Notifications. The 🔔 button is draggable, and its position is written to localStorage and retained after restart; the menu automatically pops up or down based on the button’s proximity to screen edges. Old key names like dsh.notify-sound.* are automatically migrated.

Installation and Enablement

Prerequisites: DeepSeek Harness is installed, and dsh web starts normally.

Method 1: npm (Published to npm)

dsh plugin --profile web add dsh-notify-tone

Method 2: Install from GitHub

dsh plugin --profile web add git+https://github.com/Talone22/dsh-notify-tone.git

Method 3: Local Link (Development/Debugging)

dsh plugin --profile web add link:/absolute/path/to/dsh-notify-tone

After installation, you must completely quit dsh web and restart it. After npm installation, dsh automatically registers and activates it in the profile’s dsh.profile.bundles; there is no need to manually edit cordis.patch.yml.

Uninstallation: For npm/GitHub methods, run dsh plugin --profile web remove dsh-notify-tone and restart; for local link methods, you need to delete the patch insertion line and the corresponding directory as per the README.

Typical Usage

  1. Install using one of the methods above and restart dsh web.
  2. Hover your mouse over the 🔔 in the bottom right corner of the page, turn on the Master Switch in the pop-up menu, and enable Sound, Visuals, and System Notifications as needed.
  3. In the menu, select a timbre (click to preview) and set colors for the two types of events; drag the 🔔 to a position where it doesn’t obstruct your operations.
  4. Switch to other applications or minimize the browser. When the AI completes a round of response or pops up an interaction requiring your authorization/selection, you should hear the selected timbre, see the edge lighting effect, and receive a reminder in the system notification bar; clicking the notification returns you to dsh.

If you cannot hear sound: Browser autoplay policies require the page to have been clicked at least once; click anywhere on the page first and then try again.

If you receive no system notifications: Turn on “System Notifications” in the menu and allow browser authorization; if permission is denied, you need to set “Notifications” to Allow in your site settings; on Windows, also ensure the system has not muted the browser. When the dsh page is in the foreground, some environments may not show a banner, and notifications might go directly to the notification center; they will only appear as a banner after you switch to other applications, which is common browser/system behavior.

Use Cases and Notes

Suitable for developers who run Agents in dsh web for long periods and often keep the window in the background. The plugin runs within the current dsh process and browser context. Before installation, it is recommended to browse the Source Repository and the MIT license to determine if it meets your environment requirements.

If you are using dsh-better-sidebar with pnpm 11, you might encounter an ERR_PNPM_IGNORED_BUILDS error at the end of dsh plugin --profile web add dsh-notify-tone (related to node-pty build scripts being ignored, and unrelated to this plugin’s zero dependencies), causing the plugin not to enter the bundles. You can set node-pty to true under allowBuilds: in ~/.dsh/profiles/web/pnpm-workspace.yaml, or run pnpm approve-builds as prompted by pnpm, then re-run the installation command and confirm the output is Done before restarting dsh.

Conclusion

dsh-notify-tone turns the two nodes of “It’s your turn to act” and “Response is ready” into configurable sounds, lighting effects, and system notifications. Settings are centralized in the bottom right 🔔, and state is persisted locally. For more instructions and screenshots, see the GitHub README, or enter the repository from the SkillHub Directory Page.
