Introduction

The DeepSeek Harness (DSH) plugin ecosystem emphasizes modularity and flexibility, but conversations themselves are typically linear. When you want to follow up on a previous answer or revisit historical details in the middle of an engineering task, your options are often limited: either mix the question into the main conversation, polluting the task context and every subsequent request; or start a new session, but lose the background information that makes the follow-up meaningful.

The following introduces dsh-context-branch, which provides a third option through a conversation tree. It allows you to start an isolated branch from any node in the conversation, preserving the necessary context without disrupting the main conversation.

What Is It?

This is a context-branch conversation tree plugin designed for the DeepSeek Harness Web interface. It is maintained by user yummy4727. By introducing a tree structure into the Web interface, it lets you create an independent branch session at any point in the conversation history, achieving true context isolation.

Core Features

The plugin mainly provides the following capabilities:

  • Conversation tree view: The current conversation is displayed as tree-shaped cards, with the main conversation extending downward and branches growing to the right.
  • Follow-up questions at any depth: Answers in branches can be branched again, supporting unlimited nesting.
  • True context isolation: Each branch is an independent session created through the official Fork mechanism, rather than simple prompt instructions, ensuring context purity.
  • Read-only branches: Branches can read workspace content but cannot modify the workspace, preventing disruption to the main conversation during development.
  • Progressive collapsing: For deep trees with many nodes, collapsing and expanding are supported to keep the interface clean, while folded branches still retain streaming output.
  • Non-intrusive standard interface: The plugin does not alter the standard chat view, sidebar, or message rendering, and branches do not appear in the session list.
  • Cached context reuse: Branches inherit the main conversation’s request prefix, leveraging the model provider’s caching mechanism to avoid repeatedly reading base history.

Installation and Activation

Before installing, make sure your environment meets the following requirements:

  • DeepSeek Harness version: 0.1.0-rc.7 (unmodified)
  • Node.js version: 22.19 or higher
  • Package manager: pnpm

The installation steps are as follows:

  1. Open a terminal or command-line tool.
  2. Run the following command to install the plugin:
dsh plugin --profile web add dsh-context-branch
  1. If the DeepSeek Harness Web server is running, restart that profile.

To uninstall, run:

dsh plugin --profile web remove dsh-context-branch

Typical Usage

After installation and activation, the workflow is as follows:

  1. Open a conversation session and select Tree View in the title bar at the top of the conversation.
  2. Hover over a completed assistant message and click the Ask follow-up button that appears.
  3. Enter your question. The question is displayed as a card to the right of the corresponding answer, and the reply is generated below that card.
  4. If you want to continue the conversation within this branch, click Continue this branch on the latest answer card. For further isolation, select Ask follow-up again.
  5. Click any card to read the full message. Use search, focus, collapse, overview, and zoom controls to navigate larger tree structures.
  6. When you want to return to the main task, switch back to Chat mode at any time.

Use Cases and Notes

Use cases: Suitable for users who need to frequently confirm concepts, debug parameters, or explore pathways during long-running engineering tasks. It allows you to safely conduct exploratory conversations without resetting the context.

Notes:
* Permission limits: Branches are read-only; they can read the workspace but cannot modify it.
* Invisibility in lists: Branches do not appear in the DSH session list.
* Data safety: Uninstalling the plugin only removes the plugin’s interface and services; it does not modify the main conversation content or delete branch history records.

Conclusion

dsh-context-branch solves the pain point of context isolation in linear conversations through a tree structure. It prevents the main conversation from being polluted by irrelevant questions and avoids wasting tokens in new sessions due to lost context. For developers who need fine-grained management of conversation flow, this is a practical tool.
