Geo Timezone Lookup

Problem

A request like “What time is it in New York?” is not just a string lookup. It requires parsing a location, matching the city, resolving the timezone, accounting for UTC offset, and formatting the current local time. Hardcoding cities or fixed offsets breaks when handling daylight saving time, ambiguous city names, or lat/long inputs.

How It Works

geo timezone focuses on location-to-time queries:
- Extracts a city name or lat/long coordinates from the user input
- Supports Chinese and English city names such as 北京 or Beijing
- Accepts coordinates with latitude [-90, 90] and longitude [-180, 180]
- Looks up the timezone ID, UTC offset, and current local time
- Returns the result in a consistent format

When the input is ambiguous, it prefers well-known cities; when the location cannot be determined, it asks for the country or a more specific city. It relies on Python 3, timezonefinder, and geopy, with the latter used to convert city names to coordinates.

Boundaries

This skill is best for answering “what time is it in a place?” and serving as a basic location/time resolver for larger tools. It is not a scheduling assistant, a timezone converter for arbitrary times, or a detailed DST rule explainer. Coordinate queries are more deterministic than city-name queries, which can be affected by duplicate names and vague input.
