About this skill

Problem to solve

In multi-monitor setups, desk automation, or routine IT checks, scripts often need to know how many monitors are attached, which one is primary, what the current brightness is, whether the refresh rate meets a threshold, and then power the display on/off or adjust backlight. Manual tools like ddcutil or vendor utilities can have inconsistent commands and output that is hard for AI or automation to parse.

How the skill works

The skill wraps monitor control into DisplayControlSkill.exe subcommands. On first use, the AI checks whether scripts/DisplayControlSkill.exe exists; if not, it runs scripts/setup.ps1 or an equivalent script to download the tool. After that, it calls the executable and consumes JSON output. Common capabilities include:
- get_monitor_count, get_monitor_base_info, get_monitor_resolution, get_monitor_max_freq
- get_monitor_brightness, set_monitor_brightness
- get_monitor_power_mode, set_monitor_power_mode, set_monitor_power_off
- get_monitor_feature_list, get_monitor_feature_by_index

Commands usually target a monitor index, where 0 means the first monitor; brightness or contrast values are clamped to 0-100, and out-of-range feature indices are trimmed. This makes it practical to convert requests such as “what is the current brightness?” or “set brightness to 80” into stable calls.

Boundaries

The skill depends on a local executable and a Windows or equivalent script environment; it is not a pure remote API. If the target monitor does not support the relevant DDC/CI capability, or the vendor has not exposed brightness or power control, commands may return errors or have no effect. It fits local desktop automation, IT ops, and AI-agent monitor management, but not server-side execution without local display access.

Use Cases

  • During IT checks, verify how many monitors are attached and whether resolution and max refresh rate meet policy.
  • When setting up a workstation, inspect monitor name, manufacturer, firmware version, and panel size.
  • Before a meeting demo, set the selected monitor brightness to 80 and confirm power mode is On.
  • In automation, read the supported feature list and query a feature index to confirm control capabilities.

Best For

  • IT operations engineers managing workstations: bulk-check monitor count, model, firmware, and resolution.
  • Desktop automation engineers converting brightness or power requests into stable JSON commands.
  • Ops or security staff troubleshooting display issues: inspect power mode, max refresh rate, and feature list.
  • Local AI-agent developers enabling assistants to query displays and control brightness or power.
