About this skill

The Problem

Office documents often need a clear text label such as “Confidential”, “Internal Use”, or a copyright notice during circulation. If the file is a regular text-based PDF, opening a heavyweight editor for each copy is cumbersome. pdf-watermark targets editable text PDFs and writes custom text into the output as a watermark, which is useful for repeated local scripting or uniform marking before distribution.

How It Works

The core entry point is scripts/add_watermark.py, driven by command-line arguments:

  • --input: source PDF path
  • --output: path of the watermarked PDF
  • --text: text to display, for example “Internal Use”

A typical call is python scripts/add_watermark.py --input /root/test.pdf --output /root/output.pdf --text "Internal Use". If dependency setup, Chinese font configuration, or common error handling is incomplete, the output quality can degrade, so usage.md should be consulted for runtime requirements. The key points are a readable text layer, available fonts, and a writable output path rather than complex layout control.

Boundaries

The source explicitly states that image PDFs / OCR processing are not supported and encrypted PDFs are not supported. If the file is a scan, an image-only PDF, or password-protected, this skill cannot process it directly. It is better suited to clear text-layer, unencrypted office documents where the input path and desired watermark text are known.

Use Cases

  • Before sharing internal policy PDFs, add an “Internal Use” text watermark to each text-based file.
  • Add a “Confidential” mark to product-brief PDFs before external delivery to reduce misrouting.
  • When archiving copyright contract PDFs, write a custom copyright notice into each text-based document.
  • Apply a text watermark to locally generated PDFs and save the output for later distribution.

Best For

  • Administrative staff who need to mark unencrypted internal PDFs with an “Internal Use” label
  • Sales or operations staff who add a “Confidential” watermark to text-based PDFs before customer delivery
  • Legal or compliance staff who archive contracts and write a custom copyright notice
  • Automation engineers who repeatedly generate watermarked PDF outputs via scripts
