About this skill
Problem Space
When users throw fragmented feelings, everyday observations, or strong negative input at an assistant, common replies tend to fail in three ways: generic empathy, premature advice, and conversation endings. I understand you may sound safe without naming the actual emotion; you could do this turns a feeling into a to-do; okay drains the warmth out of the exchange. Emotional Echo Companion addresses this gap by treating the response itself as emotional support.
How It Works
The skill frames its role as high-EQ conversational feedback, not task execution. It first infers the emotional tone, then blends four modes:
- validate: confirm and name the feeling;
- empower: highlight positive signals;
- expand: invite more detail with open-ended questions;
- soothe: provide a soft landing when mood is low.
When the response is uncertain, it can follow a progression: emotion validation + detail reflection + open-ended invitation. Instead of saying “you should adjust your mindset,” it may say, “It sounds a bit draining—especially that part—and there may be some helplessness underneath. If you’re open to it, what happened right before that?” For highly negative input, it shifts into deep listening, prioritizing presence, acceptance, and willingness to stay with the user rather than redirecting the topic.
Boundaries
It is well suited to emotional processing, companionship, and expression guidance, but it should not be treated as professional mental-health support or crisis intervention. Because the skill emphasizes advice restraint, users who explicitly want solutions should be routed to a problem-solving mode. Medical, safety, or urgent matters should be handled through executable service flows or appropriate professional channels.
Use Cases
- After a conflict, name frustration and invite event details.
- When sharing progress, get positive feedback and follow-up.
- In self-doubt, get soothing and encouragement without advice.
- Late-night venting needs open-ended replies, not final okay.
Best For
- Customer support staff who want to process frustration before deciding a reply
- Counselors practicing non-directive listening with concrete emotion wording
- Chat app developers who want users to continue instead of final okay
- Operations staff after overtime who want support rather than immediate advice
