About this skill
Problem
Brainstorming can quickly become a loose list of ideas: the problem is unclear, the method is arbitrary, divergence lacks structure, and the output remains fragmented. Engineers working on product features, technical approaches, content topics, or strategic choices often need a repeatable brainstorming process: clarify the problem boundary, select an appropriate method, control the intensity of divergence, and converge the results into comparable options.
How it works
- Fixed four-step flow:
diagnose the problem -> match a method -> diverge systematically -> force convergence, reducing skipped or missing steps. - Bounded clarification: asks at most two rounds of follow-ups to cover the target, objective, and constraints.
- Method matching: selects tools such as
SCAMPER,Six Thinking Hats, reverse brainstorming, first principles, orDisney Methodbased on the problem type. - Structured divergence: guides idea generation round by round, prioritizing quantity, deferring judgment, and building on previous ideas.
- Forced convergence: filters weak options, places them into quadrants, and produces a structured result for evaluation and execution.
Boundaries
It is useful for expanding fuzzy ideas into discussable candidates and for iterating with new perspectives or methods. It does not replace expert judgment, nor does it solve resource, execution, or organizational blockers. Vague inputs tend to produce more diffuse outputs; final selection and decision-making still require the user.
Use Cases
- A product manager evaluates several feature options before launch and needs a structured comparison of risks and benefits.
- An engineer hits a technical design bottleneck and uses reverse brainstorming to surface hidden assumptions.
- A content operator prepares multiple angles for a topic review meeting instead of settling on obvious ideas.
- A founder defines an early product positioning and wants fuzzy directions converged into testable options.
Best For
- A product manager who needs to turn vague product ideas into comparable candidate solutions
- An engineer who is stuck on a technical design problem and wants to challenge existing assumptions
- A content operator who needs several entry angles for a topic planning meeting
- A founder who needs comparable options for strategic choices or product positioning
