About this skill

Problem

Quoting from engineering drawings often gets stuck on reading the drawing, interpreting tolerances, and sourcing cost parameters. Customer PDFs may be scanned, section dimensions may be mistaken as stacked heights, and quotes may lack traceable material prices, machine rates, and plating assumptions.

How It Works

  • Parses the drawing first: extracts text with pymupdf; if empty, renders it at 300 DPI to PNG for multimodal reading.
  • Cross-checks overall length, width, and thickness to avoid treating A-A/E-E section annotations as cumulative dimensions.
  • Produces an eight-section PDF report: structure, material, surface finish, process and cost, technical requirements, risks, tolerance-relief recommendations, and conclusion.
  • Cost breakdown requires material density, volume, net weight, unit price source, cycle time, machine rate, and tool depreciation.
  • Gold plating defaults to 0.02 μm flash gold when unspecified, with gold price source required.
  • Tolerance relief includes rationale and preserves CTQ, FAIR, PPAP, and safety-regulated items that cannot be relaxed.

Boundaries

Suitable for customer drawings, process review, DFM, and internal drawing audit. It does not replace formal quote approval, nor cover missing color specs, regulatory parts, or functional heavy plating that requires customer confirmation.

Use Cases

  • Review customer PDF drawings with quantity and lead time to estimate structure, process cost, and tax-inclusive quote.
  • Prepare a process-review report covering tolerances, material, and surface finish from the drawing.
  • Run DFM checks on thin walls, small threads, and position tolerances to propose relaxation or retention.
  • Audit CAD-exported PDFs to verify overall dimensions and generate an evaluation PDF with the original drawing attached.

Best For

  • Mechanical quoting engineer: needs rapid cost breakdown and factory-price recommendation after receiving customer drawings.
  • Process engineer: needs to confirm routing, risks, and tolerance-relief limits during drawing review.
  • DFM engineer: needs manufacturability analysis for thin walls, small threads, and position tolerances.
  • Technical sales engineer: needs to package drawing evaluation, quote basis, and customer confirmation items into a PDF.
