About this skill

What It Solves

In US equity audit, compliance, and financial analysis workflows, teams often need SEC EDGAR filings for a specific company and period, while manually resolving CIKs, navigating indexes, and downloading PDF or HTM files is fragmented. This skill turns a Ticker, date range, and form type into a repeatable search and download workflow.

How It Works

  • Uses SEC public JSON APIs: resolves AAPL-style tickers to CIKs via company_tickers.json, then queries submissions/CIK...json.
  • Provides search and download subcommands for metadata lookup or primary-document retrieval.
  • Filters filings by --form, such as 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, and 20-F, and caps results with --max-records.
  • Outputs structured JSON or .xlsx files with fields like document_url, index_url, filing_date, and report_date.

Boundaries and Notes

It focuses on locating and downloading public disclosure documents, not extracting financial metrics or producing audit conclusions. SEC requests require a User-Agent header, and the script should enforce rate limiting around 10 requests per second. Downloaded formats depend on the original filing and are commonly .htm, .html, or occasionally .pdf.

Use Cases

  • During US equity audit, search 10-K, 10-Q, and 8-K filings by client ticker and period, then batch-download primary documents.
  • For financial analysis, retrieve SEC filing metadata by ticker and date range, export Excel, and keep document links.
  • In compliance review, list recent 8-K material events for a company to check disclosure timeliness and filing-type changes.
  • For data preparation, map tickers to CIKs, query submissions, and cap record count for easier reconciliation.

Best For

  • US audit assistants: need to quickly download a client's 10-K/10-Q/8-K filings for a period into audit working papers.
  • Financial analysts: need to retrieve SEC filing lists by ticker and date range and export them to Excel.
  • Compliance and risk reviewers: need to check whether filings such as 8-K are timely and complete, and compare filing-type changes.
  • Data engineers: need to structure SEC EDGAR JSON API results into records for downstream processing.
