About this skill

What It Solves

OpenClaw data is spread across ~/.openclaw, multiple workspace-* directories, and memory directories. Manual copying can miss agent workspaces, while ad-hoc scripts are hard to keep consistent. This skill turns backup targets, compression, scheduling, cleanup, and notifications into a single configuration workflow for local or server-side retention.

How It Works

The first-run interactive wizard detects workspace directories and writes them to config.json as default backup targets. Backups support full and partial modes, allowing selected files or folders to be included. Results are compressed into ZIP archives with rule-based names. Scheduled execution can use HEARTBEAT polling or Cron jobs, which fits both periodic checks and fixed-time runs. Commands such as /backup_now, /backup_status, /backup_config, /backup_list, and /backup_clean cover manual runs, status inspection, configuration, listing, and cleanup.

Boundaries And Caveats

The default policy is advisory rather than restrictive: the skill does not force-exclude sensitive files such as keys, credentials, or environment variables, but it can suggest exclusions. Notification requires the corresponding OpenClaw communication channel to be configured first. After upgrading, backup.mode may default to partial, so re-confirm the backup scope and retention policy before relying on it.

Use Cases

  • Schedule periodic backups across multiple OpenClaw workspace and memory directories to avoid missing agent data.
  • Configure a Cron job to compress local OpenClaw user data into ZIP archives and retain recent backups.
  • Before upgrading an OpenClaw skill, use selective backup to preserve chosen config, memory, and workspace files.
  • Troubleshoot failed runs by reviewing execution logs and receiving results via configured OpenClaw channels.

Best For

  • IT ops engineers responsible for local OpenClaw environments and periodic backup of workspace and memory data
  • Teams managing multiple agent workspaces that need auto-detected backup targets to avoid missed directories
  • Operators who need to schedule OpenClaw backups with Cron or HEARTBEAT jobs
  • AI application owners concerned about keys or credentials who want a reviewable backup scope
