About this skill

The Specific Problem

Complex events, organizational decisions, interpersonal dynamics, and public debates often look, on the surface, like argument, emotion, or rhetoric. Reading only the visible text can be misleading when part of the story is omitted, values are used as labels, or incentives are hidden behind positioning. This skill targets situations where something feels “off,” but the issue is hard to name: whether a decision is internally consistent, what a behavior is actually trying to achieve, how costs and risks are being transferred, and whether a visible event is a symptom or a root cause. It turns analysis into repeatable checks instead of relying only on gut judgment.

How the Skill Works

The core is a seven-step essence-analysis framework built around motives, interests, drivers, root causes, and final outcomes. The practical steps include:
- Decompose the surface: look not only at what someone says, but at observable actions and effects
- Trace interests: identify who benefits, who loses, and where costs and risks are shifted
- Find drivers: separate interest, emotion, belief, and environment as possible forces behind behavior
- Distinguish causes: map surface events such as conflict, resignation, resistance, or burnout to more stable underlying causes
- Infer the long run: use short-term costs and long-term outcomes to judge the true nature of a behavior
- Expose information manipulation: detect selective facts, story over logic, manufactured opposition, oversimplification, and emotional arousal

It is useful for complex decisions, organizational analysis, business judgment, public-event breakdowns, and rational reflection when a situation feels inconsistent. Its boundaries matter: in urgent danger, act first; in moments requiring empathy, avoid over-analysis; in purely positive experiences, analysis may be unnecessary. Use it to avoid conspiracy thinking, analysis paralysis, and privacy overreach. The goal is not cynicism, but clearer and more autonomous choice.

Use Cases

  • Review a product proposal to check whether stated reasons match incentives and uncover the real motive.
  • Analyze post-layoff attrition by separating short-term cost saving from long-term risk transfer.
  • Break down a hot event report to detect selective facts, emotional framing, and manufactured opposition.
  • Retrospect a team conflict by mapping surface arguments to resource, power, or safety issues.

Best For

  • Product managers reviewing proposals who need to test stated motives against real incentives.
  • Team leads running retrospectives who need to map conflicts to resources, power, or safety.
  • Operations or comms owners handling hot topics who need to detect selective facts and emotional framing.
  • Managers making business decisions who need to see long-term risk behind short-term gains.
