About this skill

Problem

Legal translation often hinges on term selection rather than general vocabulary. The same Chinese term may map differently in HK/common-law and PRC contexts: 物权 can be property right or real right, while 法定代表人 and 审判委员会 may lack stable common-law equivalents. Relying on generic dictionaries can produce translations that read well but miss the legal system.

How It Works

The skill turns terminology lookup into a concrete workflow: determine the query direction (Chinese to English, English to Chinese, or both), then match in the order exact -> substring -> fuzzy. For domain-specific queries, add a --domain filter for civil, criminal, commercial, procedural, constitutional/administrative, or international law. It combines roughly 34,000 general terms derived from the HKDOJ bilingual glossary with about 950 PRC-specific terms sourced from the Civil Code, Criminal Law, Company Law, procedural laws, constitutional/administrative law, and international law. Results can be rendered as text or JSON, making it easier to feed into review, comparison, or MCP-based legal research pipelines.

Boundaries

The skill focuses on term alignment, not full statutory retrieval or document-level translation. The HK-sourced glossary leans toward common law, so PRC-specific concepts such as 人民调解, 行政复议, and 指导性案例 should be checked against the mainland terms file. Verify final wording against statutory text, official English translations, and relevant judicial materials.

Use Cases

  • Review contract drafts and confirm PRC legal representative.
  • Filter civil-law terms before translating a complaint.
  • Compare property right and real right across HK and PRC.
  • Export JSON term matches for statutory verification.

Best For

  • Legal translator reviewing English terms in contracts and pleadings.
  • Cross-border counsel confirming PRC term usages in memos.
  • Legal researcher linking term lookup with statutory checks.
  • Compliance engineer building JSON-based term lookup pipelines.
