Home Renovation Management Memo

The Problem

Home renovation is a multi-week project with many moving parts: quotes, measurements, suppliers, phase handoffs, and actual spend easily scatter across chat history, sticky notes, and memory. Later, it is hard to reconcile whether an item was purchased, what plumbing acceptance included, or which pitfall still needs follow-up.

How It Works

Home Renovation Management Memo keeps renovation state in a local JSON file, defaulting to ~/.home_renovation/data.json; RENOVATION_DATA_DIR can point to another directory. It organizes work around a few core objects:

• Phases: progress through design → demolition → plumbing → tiling → woodwork → painting → install → furnishing → finish, with phase showing current and upcoming stages.
• Budget: budget add records planned items, budget set --actual updates spend, and --status marks pending, ordered, purchased, or installed.
• Records: contacts, measurements, milestones, and pitfall notes are tracked separately, making node-specific lookups easier.
• Checklists: checklist can list tasks for the current or a specified phase to reduce missed items.
• Backup: export writes JSON or a Markdown summary, and import restores data on another machine.

Boundaries

It suits individuals, households, or small teams managing a renovation, but it does not replace a family ledger, purchase contracts, or formal project management. The data model is single-file, and multiple devices do not sync in real time. Multiple users can use the same agent, but concurrent edits should be avoided. Accuracy depends on timely entry of quotes, dimensions, and phase changes.
