About this skill

Problem

Long conversations can lose state when context usage rises, a milestone ends, or the model starts repeating questions. Pasting the old transcript into a new session is unreliable: it mixes decisions, chatter, paths, and credentials, and the new model does not know which items are binding.

How It Works

Session Handoff Pro SL creates a structured handoff.md and a startup prompt during work, rather than compressing or trimming history. It scans project identity, decision chains, data flow, code changes, platform state, environment config, user preferences, and possible next branches; writes to platform-specific paths such as .workbuddy/session-handoff.md or docs/session-handoff.md; validates coverage with templates and checklists; and generates a Load → Report → Ask prompt for the next session.

Boundaries

It fits engineering tasks such as code, docs, specs, and sprints. It is not ideal for chatty exchanges under five turns; when context is already saturated, it can switch to a fast mode with required sections only; and it does not force a handoff if the user declines. It complements long-term memory and post-session review rather than replacing them.

Use Cases

  • Context usage is near 60%, and the current coding task needs to continue in a new session.
  • After a release milestone, capture decisions, file changes, and next steps in a reusable handoff document.
  • Before switching from coding to writing, save the current state and generate a startup prompt for the next session.
  • When a long conversation starts repeating questions, branch at a natural point while keeping key constraints.

Best For

  • Engineers maintaining long-running code projects who need to preserve decisions and file changes across sessions.
  • Product or technical writers who need to turn milestone drafts into a resumable workflow.
  • Independent developers switching between tasks who need to keep old context from polluting new branches.
  • Privacy-sensitive technical leads who need automatic masking and placeholders in generated handoff documents.
