About this skill

Problem

When a user says they feel anxious, on edge, panicky, or nervous before an interview, abstract advice often does not help. This skill targets that moment: it provides immediately usable, evidence-informed anxiety relief techniques and daily practice options, without diagnosing or replacing therapy.

How It Works

It first distinguishes acute anxiety from chronic worry, then selects a technique:
- Acute distress: guided 4-7-8 breathing or 5-4-3-2-1 grounding
- Intrusive thoughts: cognitive reframing that separates facts from worries
- Physical tension: progressive muscle relaxation, or PMR
- Daily prevention: a 5-10 minute practice plan and an anxiety journal

Each step stays short: offer one doable action, check how the person feels, then discuss longer-term strategies. The tone remains calm and non-judgmental. For panic attacks or self-harm thoughts, it routes to crisis support and discourages self-adjusting medication.

Boundaries

It is for self-regulation, situational coping, and routine practice. It is not for diagnosing anxiety disorders, delivering full CBT, adjusting medication, or treating PTSD. It also advises seeking professional help first if there are self-harm thoughts, prolonged insomnia, or clear impairment at work or home. Seek professional mental health or psychiatric help when anxiety is severe, frequent, or impairing.

Use Cases

  • Feeling shaky before an interview and needing quick breathwork to settle
  • Ruminating before a difficult support call and using cognitive reframing
  • Feeling physically tense before a review and using grounding plus PMR
  • Worrying about deadlines and setting a 10-minute daily anxiety plan

Best For

  • Job candidates who feel tense before interviews and need quick stabilization
  • Support agents who feel physically anxious on difficult calls and need grounding
  • Product, engineering, or operations staff who ruminate before presentations
  • Professionals with persistent future worries who want a daily practice plan
