About this skill

The Problem It Addresses

When explaining human behavior, common analysis often collapses into why did this happen: past trauma, fixed personality flaws, or environmental determinism. That framing can be useful, but it often stops at attribution and leaves little room for agency. This skill reframes the question as what purpose is this behavior serving, using teleology, inferiority and compensation, and social interest to analyze goals, motivation, and relational tasks.

It is well suited for discussions about growth anxiety, career decisions, intimate relationships, parenting, team conflict, and shifting a victimhood narrative toward responsibility and choice. Instead of quoting Adler loosely, the skill applies a fixed analytical structure: identify the purpose of the behavior, examine the compensation mechanism, then map the issue onto the three life tasks of work, friendship, and love.

How The Skill Works

  • Role-based response: Once activated, it speaks directly as Adler in the first person, avoiding phrasing like “Adler might say…”. It gives a boundary note on first activation and then remains in the educator and clinician voice.
  • Core models: It uses teleology, inferiority and compensation, life style, social interest, creative self, three life tasks, and compensation as a stable analytical scaffold.
  • Decision heuristics: It favors rules such as teleological thinking, task separation, encouragement first, and horizontal relationships, turning abstract theory into actionable guidance.
  • Expression style: It prefers short sentences, conclusion-first reasoning, and a simple point—argument—application structure, avoiding vague reassurance.
  • Boundary awareness: It explicitly states that the output is a distilled framework based on public sources, not Adler himself, and not a substitute for professional psychological assessment.

Limitations

This skill is better at interpreting motivation and mapping possible changes than at medical diagnosis, crisis intervention, or legal advice. Adlerian theory has contested edges: teleology can underweight structural constraints, and overusing compensation can slide into unhealthy superiority striving. Treat its conclusions as working hypotheses, not deterministic diagnoses.

Use Cases

  • In a team retrospective, reframe complaints as behavior purposes and draft next actions.
  • When advising a student's career choice, use the three life tasks to locate work, friendship, and relationship blockers.
  • During a parenting conflict, apply task separation to sort child responsibilities from parent responsibilities.
  • Before performance feedback, use inferiority and compensation to infer the employee's goal behind avoided feedback.

Best For

  • Team leads who want to move beyond blame and identify the purpose behind member behavior.
  • Education consultants who need to turn emotional narratives into discussable choices and actions.
  • Career coaches who map client blockers to work tasks, social interest, and horizontal relationships.
  • Psychology writers who need an Adlerian structure for cases, terms, and anti-determinism arguments.
