About this skill
Problem
Verbal comprehension questions often hinge on telling an example or a macro summary apart from the actual point. Main-idea items can over-index on examples, pre-turn clauses, or vague high-level statements; inference items can over-fit the final sentence; ordering and detail-judgment items benefit from a stable elimination chain. This skill packages common question types into a reusable checking workflow so options can be compared on explicit differences rather than gut feeling.
How It Works
- Main-idea questions: identify how the view is introduced, including
necessity, questions, countermeasures, negative countermeasures, others' experience, andimportance bridges, then checkCAB structure, turning points, contrasts, modifier structures, and the four passage patterns. - Other types: for next-sentence inference, ground the choice in the final sentence while keeping the whole passage in view; for ordering, use elimination, pairing, and verification; for detail judgment, scan for tense, concept, scope, and logic swaps; for logical fill-in, prioritize contextual fit.
- Output discipline: the skill expects option differences to be compared in tables, traps to be mapped to options, and reasoning to be shown rather than only giving a final answer.
Boundaries
It is useful as an analysis aid for verbal comprehension items, especially main-idea, detail judgment, and logical fill-in. It does not invent facts beyond the source passage and is not a guaranteed template for every question. For long passages, multiple competing points, or tightly similar options, the final check still has to be sentence-level evidence from the passage.
Use Cases
- Reviewing civil-service verbal comprehension practice, identify the main point and remove example or broad-summary distractors.
- Marking verbal comprehension assignments, map each option to traps like concept swaps, overgeneralization, and pre-turn emphasis.
- Curating logical fill-in and detail-judgment questions, tag high-frequency errors by context fit, tense, scope, and concept.
- Drafting a verbal comprehension study guide, turn inference, ordering, and sentence-insertion steps into reusable checklists.
Best For
- Civil-service exam candidates preparing verbal comprehension who want to locate main points and eliminate distractors reliably.
- Teachers teaching verbal comprehension who need to turn option traps and reasoning into explainable comparison tables.
- Curriculum editors compiling exam banks who want to label common errors in detail judgment and logical fill-in questions.
- Self-study learners building consistent checklists for inference, ordering, and sentence-insertion questions.
