About this skill
Problem It Solves
When drafting a business model canvas, the common failure is not a missing template; it is filling nine boxes with slogans such as Customer Segments as “everyone” and Revenue Streams as “subscriptions”, without explaining why customers pay or which assumptions need validation. This skill is useful for product and operations leads who need to turn a business model from a conclusion sheet into a reasoning process, especially for early-stage ventures where the key question is whether an assumption holds.
How It Works
It starts with three opening questions: what product or business you are designing, what stage you are in, and which block you most want to clarify. This prevents the skill from jumping straight into a template. It then explores the canvas in a fixed order: Customer Segments, Value Propositions, Channels, Customer Relationships, Revenue Streams, Key Resources, Key Activities, Key Partnerships, and Cost Structure.
Each block uses a three-level questioning style:
- Foundation: establish the basic facts, such as who the target user is and where revenue comes from.
- Deep Dive: probe the reasoning behind choices, such as why customers choose your product and which channels underperformed.
- Essence: surface assumptions and failure modes, such as what happens if the value proposition is invalid and how you would validate it.
After the block-by-block exploration, it asks reflection questions, organizes the answers into a clean nine-block canvas, highlights key assumptions and validation gaps, and proposes a validation plan.
Scope And Limits
This skill is best used for clarification, assumptions testing, and structuring business logic. It does not replace financial forecasting, market sizing, or compliance analysis. If the user lacks information, the process can rephrase or skip a question. For quantitative claims about revenue, cost, or market size, additional data sources and models are still required.
Use Cases
- Pre-launch product lead uses the nine-block Socratic flow to clarify customer, value, and revenue assumptions.
- Operations lead drafts a new business proposal and checks whether channels, partnerships, and costs are coherent.
- Founder structures fragmented ideas into a verifiable Business Model Canvas with key assumptions flagged before fundraising.
- Product manager reviews paid-feature logic, pricing rationale, revenue sources, and why customers are willing to pay.
Best For
- Early-stage product leads: need to turn customer, value, and revenue statements into testable assumptions.
- Founders: need a coherent business model and high-risk assumptions before launch or fundraising.
- Operations or growth leads: need to check whether customers, channels, costs, and partnerships fit a new business plan.
- Product managers: need to examine pricing, willingness to pay, and revenue logic with underlying assumptions.
