About this skill
Problem
Logo design often skips the parts that make it usable in product teams: favicon legibility, dark-mode variants, type/icon weight consistency, and a complete file specification. This skill treats logo design as an auditable process: constrain the brand context, compare concept directions, and land on deliverables with explicit rules.
How It Works
It moves through six stages:
- Collect brand context: brand name, industry, audience, competitors, required colors/fonts/assets, and primary surfaces such as web, mobile, packaging, and signage.
- Define the brief: turn values, visual keywords, constraints, and logo types into a brief, including icon/symbol, wordmark, combination mark, and favicon/app icon.
- Generate 2-3 concepts: each includes symbol logic, primary/secondary/accent palette with hex codes, typeface pairing, and visual metaphor.
- Refine the chosen direction: adjust proportion, letter-spacing, icon weight, and color balance, then test at 16x16, 48x48, 200px, and large print scales.
- Produce final specs: SVG master, multiple PNG sizes, ICO favicon, light/dark variants, monochrome version, minimum size, and clear-space rules.
- Document guidelines: exact color values, typeface names and weights, safe zone, and misuse examples.
Boundaries
It focuses on design specification and workflow rather than guaranteed final vector production. Actual SVG/PNG/ICO assets still need a design tool or generation workflow. It fits early brand naming, competitive differentiation, dark mode, small icons, and multi-variant management; it is not a substitute for highly custom illustration, embroidery/engraving prototyping, or trademark clearance.
Use Cases
- Draft a logo brief and 2-3 concept directions with color palettes and type pairings for a startup brand.
- Break an existing logo into primary, icon, wordmark, favicon, and monochrome variants with SVG/PNG/ICO sizes.
- Check whether a logo reads at 16x16, on dark backgrounds, and in small print, then define simplification and clear-space rules.
- Write a brand mark guide with exact color values, typeface weights, safe zone, minimum sizes, and misuse examples.
Best For
- Product leads who need to establish a startup logo, favicon, and basic usage guidelines for a new product.
- Designers who must organize brand colors, typefaces, and logo variants into deliverable file specifications.
- Frontend or brand engineers checking whether a logo works in app icons, dark-mode web UI, and small print.
- Brand managers coordinating multiple sub-brands under a shared icon grid, color system, and typography.
