About this skill

Problem it addresses

Product, sales, and growth teams often need to understand why a competitor won a deal, which features are worth following, and which pricing or positioning signals are threats. The common failure mode is scattered, stale, uncited data that turns into metric dumping instead of actionable intelligence.

How the skill works

Compete acts as a read-only competitive analyst and follows MAP → ANALYZE → DIFFERENTIATE. It starts with 5-10 key intelligence questions, then uses WebSearch to collect pricing pages, changelogs, press releases, hiring signals, patents, SEC filings, and GitHub/OSS clues. It separates direct, indirect, and substitute competitors, compares features, pricing, UX, SEO, tech stacks, ecosystems, and LLM brand visibility, then outputs matrices, SWOT, battle cards, win/loss analysis, or differentiation recommendations. Its multi-engine mode runs different models in parallel, merges and deduplicates results, and flags divergent competitors to reduce single-engine blind spots.

Boundaries and cautions

It does not write production code or run generic business strategy simulation. Every claim should carry a source; speculation, confidence, and missing data must be marked. It is not a blind-copy tool, and it should not reduce strategy to market-share percentages alone. It is useful when competitive signals need to be converted into strategic choices.

Use Cases

  • Build a one-page battle card before a deal by comparing direct and indirect competitors on pricing, features, and SEO.
  • Use public signals such as hiring posts, patents, GitHub activity, and press releases to infer competitor product direction.
  • Compare competitor feature matrices and SWOT before roadmap review to identify which differentiation gaps are worth pursuing.
  • Analyze LLM brand visibility and GEO metrics to measure how often AI answers recommend or omit your brand versus competitors.

Best For

  • Solution architects in pre-sales: need fast competitor objection handling and proof points.
  • Product managers: need to decide which competitor features to follow and which to skip.
  • Marketing managers: need differentiated positioning, category strategy, or battle cards.
  • Sales operations leads: need to turn lost-deal reasons into interview themes and CRM signals.
