About this skill
Problem
WorkBuddy desktop usually has a fixed default UI. Community theme projects exist, but manually cloning the repo, locating the executable, restarting with a debug port, and injecting styles can fail because of path encoding, process-tree lifecycle, and PowerShell compatibility. This skill targets engineers who want to switch appearance, restore the native look, or verify a reliable theme-injection flow.
How it works
It wraps the community open-source theme workflow into repeatable steps: clone the repository to an ASCII path, explicitly locate WorkBuddy.exe, then use the bundled Node launcher to restart WorkBuddy in detached mode. The debug port binds to 127.0.0.1, and CSS is injected into the running renderer. Key properties include:
- It does not modify the official install directory, binaries, or digital signature.
- It does not read or transmit passwords, tokens, or user files.
- The theme is valid for that run only; manual restart drops it.
- After applying, confirm the 🎨 menu or probe CDP; on failure, read the result and log files.
Boundaries and notes
It is meant for local, trusted desktop appearance customization. CDP is localhost-only, so avoid running untrusted local programs while a skin is active. Chinese paths, inline restart execution, or reusing the repository’s PowerShell script can fail; the skill relies on the Node launcher, ASCII paths, and detached startup to avoid these issues.
Use Cases
- Apply a WorkBuddy desktop theme on a local Windows machine and confirm the top-right menu appears.
- If a theme is lost after restart, rerun the apply flow and inspect result and log files for failures.
- Temporarily switch WorkBuddy appearance by injecting CSS locally, then revert to the native UI when done.
- Debug failed skin application by checking for an ASCII repo path, detached restart, and loopback CDP binding.
Best For
- Engineers using WorkBuddy for desktop collaboration who want a temporary community theme and easy restore.
- Engineers maintaining local UI scripts who need to trace theme failures to paths or restart behavior.
- QA engineers testing CDP injection who need to verify loopback binding and no official-file changes.
- Product engineers demoing customizable desktop UI in trusted Windows environments with auditable steps.
