About this model

Llama 3.1 70B is Meta's 70-billion-parameter base (pretrained) language model released in July 2024 as part of the Llama 3.1 family alongside 8B and 405B variants. It is an autoregressive transformer with Grouped-Query Attention (GQA), trained on approximately 15 trillion tokens of publicly available multilingual text and code, with a knowledge cutoff of December 2023. The model supports a 128K-token context window—eight times longer than Llama 3—and is designed as a foundation for fine-tuning, distillation, and downstream applications across English, German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Hindi, Spanish, and Thai.

On standard benchmarks, the base model achieves 79.3 on MMLU (5-shot) and 52.47 on MMLU-Pro, with strong reading comprehension (79.6 DROP F1) and reasoning scores (81.6 BBH, 92.9 ARC-Challenge). When instruction-tuned (Llama 3.1 70B Instruct), the family reaches 80.5 on HumanEval, 86.0 on MBPP, and 67.8 on MATH, making it competitive with leading open and closed chat models at the time of release.

Released under the Llama 3.1 Community License, Llama 3.1 70B is available on Hugging Face for research and commercial use (subject to license terms for large-scale deployments). Weights are distributed in BF16 (~140 GB), and the model can be run with transformers, vLLM, or llama.cpp, with quantization options enabling deployment on a single high-end GPU.
